Charles R. Smith

Charles Robert Smith, 85, of Andover, CT died peacefully at home on Sunday, January 17, 2020. Born April 20,1935 in Monroe, NH, Son of the late Eben H. and Mabel (Mackie) Smith. Charles served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. After returning home, he spent time in Haverhill, NH before relocating to Manchester, CT where he met his beloved wife of 57 years, Marion. His first job was as a mechanic at Bob Bourne Buick, Manchester, CT. He later worked for the Town of Manchester, Highway Department retiring after 34 years of service. Charlie and Marion resided in Andover, CT for 55 years. He was a fiercely loyal New York Yankees fan and devoted UCONN Girls Basketball fan. He was a proud 8 year member of the Manchester Fire Dept 8th District and later served on the Andover Board of Fire Commissioners. Charlie loved to tinker in his home garage, play cards with neighbors, watch Westerns on TV and drive his John Deere tractor. Always one to offer a helping hand, he will be deeply missed by his many friends and neighbors. Above all Charlie was a devoted father and his grandchildren were his pride and Joy. Beside his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his wife Marion ( Maciejko ) Smith and his brother, Eben H. Smith. Charles is survived by his only child, Diane Massey and her husband Gregory of West Hartford, CT; grandchildren; Brooke Massey of Brooklyn, NY and Clayton Massey of Nyack, NY. Also survived by his sister-in-law Mary E. Smith, of West Newbury, VT, and 2nd cousins John & Marylou Aremburg of Chester, VT. Services will be private due to the pandemic; however, a Graveside Memorial Ceremony and Service will be held June 6, 2021 (Charlie & Marions Wedding anniversary ) at Andover Townsend Cemetery, wherein both Charles and Marion will be inurned together at 11 A.M.
