Carlton N. Chace

March 13, 1920 — February 10, 2017

Carlton N. Chace, 96, beloved husband of the late Harriet T. (O'Hara) Chace, died peacefully on Friday, February 10, 2017. Born in Manchester, Connecticut, he was the son of Winfield Morton and Augusta (Neumann) Chace. He attended Manchester schools and graduated from Manchester High School in 1938. Carl joined the Army in 1942 and was assigned to "I" Company, third battalion 157th infantry. The 157th infantry was a Colorado National Guard outfit that was involved in the Spanish American War and the Indian Wars. Carl was a sergeant in charge of a light machine gun squad. As a unit, they fought in Sicily, Salerno, and Anzio Italy, Southern France and Germany and made 4 amphibious landings. He received awards during that period including a Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star, and a Purple Heart for wounds received at the overpass in Anzio. His unit received a Presidential Unit Citation for the defense of the overpass in Anzio. If the Germans had broken through the overpass, they would have destroyed the allied beachhead. Carl met his future wife in 1944 at a station hospital in England. After the war, they reunited in New England and were married June 3, 1947. As a married couple, they lived in Manchester for many years. Carl is survived by his son, William H. Chace of Steamboat Springs, CO, and his daughter, Martha A. Chace of East Hartford. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Harriet T. O'Hara Chace, in May 2013, and his daughter, Mary Chace Paro, in March 2012. The Chace family extends sincere thanks to the staff of Always Best Care of Manchester for the gentle and kind care they provided Carl, as well as to the staff of White Oaks.
