Betsey S. Baker

Betsey S. Baker of Manchester, beloved wife of Frederick A. Baker (deceased) and devoted mother to Barbara E. Dowd of DE passed away May 20th. She was born in North Scituate, RI to Emily and William Steere. While attending Hope High school in Providence she worked part time at Fanny Farmer Candy Store. After her marriage she found employment at Stillwater Worsteds in Greenville, RI which produced yarns for WWII soldiers' uniforms. Later in life she took business courses which helped her find employment at AFPRO Pratt/Whitney, DCASPRO KAMAN, and later the medical administrative offices at the VA Hospital in Newington, CT. She loved life and had many interests.She was a member of Eastern Star, DAR, and served as a member of the Permanent Memorial Day Committee in Manchester which organizes the parade and observances for Memorial Day. Other pursuits included teaching tailoring and health food cooking at Manchester High School Evening Classes. Spurred on by her love of plants she became a Master Gardener and participated in several volunteer projects. Loving animals as she did, she adopted two rescue greyhounds and one, RandyJoseph often visited the patients at Newington VA hospital. Betsey and Fred remodeled her old family home in R.I. and while staying in Scituate, enjoyed worship services and fellowship at Our Savior Parish in Woonsocket, RI. In addition to her daughter she leaves behind two nieces: Mary Ann Blackmore of RI, Dotty LaVerdiere of Virginia Beach, and two nephews: Edward T. Baker of Florida and RI, and Norman Baker of Georgia as well as many grand nieces and nephews. A private graveside service will be held at Acotes Hill Cemetary, Chepachet, R.I. A memorial service will be held at a later time.
