Barbara Janet (Ferris) Lucas, 87, died peacefully on January 7, 2018. She was born December 7, 1930, to Maurice and Esther (Soper) Ferris in Manchester, CT and lived in the town all her life.
Her joys in life included listening to jazz, tending to her self-dug garden of resplendent lilies and herbs, hosting elegant tea parties with savory treats and delightful confections, and being a bibliophile, collecting, sharing, and reading many, many books. She loved camping in Vermont and traveling with her husband to Montana, Nova Scotia, and Maine, as well as a trip to England with her sister Mary.
She leaves behind her beloved husband Edward T. Lucas, dearest daughter Janet Stone and her husband Rick, beloved members of the Lucas, Stone, Walker, and Ferris families, dear neighbors of the Fregin, Hayes, and Hoover families, and dear friends Florence Beaupre, Brenda Gower, and Nola Curry, with whom she shared recipes, books, and conversations.
Barbara will be missed for her genuine interest in other people, encouraging nature, and fun sense of humor. As she loved cats and dogs, contributions to pet rescues may be made in lieu of flowers. A memorial to celebrate her life will be held in April. To leave an online condolence, please visit
