Ann England

Ann Gertrude Katherine England, a cherished member of the Manchester community, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025. Born on December 11, 1937, in Manchester, CT, she was the beloved daughter of Cecil W. England and Lillian T. (Glista) England, both of whom loved her deeply. Ann was known for her remarkable talents, strong character, and an unwavering commitment to education.

Growing up in Manchester, Ann was deeply influenced by her teachers and her community library. She was fortunate to have been admired and trained by Helen Estes, renowned as the National Teacher of The Year, who instilled in her a commitment to learning and teaching her students. Ann played the violin with the Manchester High Orchestra, which was led by Mr. Pearsons. In doing so, she developed a skill and poise that enriched her life and the lives of those around her.

Her academic journey led her to Connecticut College, where she attained her Bachelor of Arts, and she later earned her Masters in Teaching Education and English. Ann took her talents overseas to Birmingham, England, humorously noted for teaching English to the English, which always brought a smile to the faces of her colleagues and students alike.

The call of adventure took Ann around the globe. She proudly served with the State Department and the Army, where she held assignments in Italy and Asia. Her travels were extensive, with memorable experiences in Burma, Vietnam, and a lengthy assignment in Hong Kong, enriching her life and broadening her perspectives.

Ann had great admiration and held her own personal beliefs and standards along side that of Former President George H. W. Bush, who referred to her as “Annie.” These traits can be found in one of his most famous quotes, “Those who travel the High Road of humility are not bothered by heavy traffic.”

Returning to the United States, Ann continued her distinguished career with the Inspector General’s office in Washington, D.C., as an Inspector General. Her contributions to public service were significant, and she retired in the 1960s, leaving a legacy of integrity, courage and dedication.

Ann is survived by her beloved sister, Cecily England, who will forever cherish the memories of their time together.

In her countless endeavors, Ann England exemplified grace, intelligence, and compassion. She will be deeply missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit and legacy will continue to inspire many as we remember a life beautifully lived.

Burial will take place on Saturday, September 27th at St. James Cemetery in Manchester CT at 11:45am. Please meet directly at the cemetery for service.
