Albert Downing Jr., 95, lifelong resident of Manchester, husband of the late Kathleen P. (Boggs) Downing, died Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Hartford Hospital.
Al was born in Willimantic on July 12, 1920, son of Albert and Margaret (Turner) Downing,,was raised in Manchester, and graduated from Manchester High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy as a radioman, and was a survivor of the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a retired letter carrier for the US Postal Service where he served for over thirty years, and after retirement worked for the Park-Hill Joyce Flower Shop in Manchester for over ten years.
He was a longtime parishioner of St. Bartholomew Church, and was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan.
Al is survived by three daughters and three sons, Patricia M. Putnam of Amelia Island, FL, Kathleen M. Coughlin of Bradenton, FL, Ann Marie Souza of Gastonia, NC, Michael J. Downing of Medway, MA, Mark A. Downing of Merrimack, NH, and Christopher P. Downing of Santa Rosa, CA; twelve grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 18, at 11:00 AM at St. Bartholomew Church, 25 Ludlow Road, Manchester. Burial with military honors will follow in the East Cemetery in Manchester. Family and friends may call on Friday from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center Street, Manchester.
