Ralph J. “Skip” Barber, 79, lifelong resident of Manchester, beloved husband of 62 years to Janis (Koelsch) Barber, passed away Wednesday, January 9, 2019, with his family by his side. Skip was born on April 23, 1939, in Manchester, to the late Louis and Althea (Meinke) Barber.
Skip grew up in Manchester, attended local schools and was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1957. During high school, Skip joined the Marines where he proudly served his country for over six years in the reserves. In his younger years, Skip was involved with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts as a participant and then leader in Manchester. When he was in high school, he was a member of the Manchester High School Band and Orchestra. Skip worked as a meat cutter for many years at many locations. Some included First National, Edwards and most recently Stop & Shop up until his retirement in 2004. Skip was a steadying presence in the lives of all that knew him. He was devoted to and loved his family. Skip was always willing to lend a helping hand or quietly support a friend, neighbor, or family member in need. He will be missed.
In addition to his wife Janis, Skip is survived by his four children; Ralph Barber Jr., Russell Barber and his wife Lydia, Ronald Barber Sr. and Debbie and Jeanine Barber; his two grandchildren Brittanymarie Barber and Ronald Barber Jr; his sister Marilyn Barber and numerous nieces and nephews. Skip was predeceased by his parents and his brother Louis Barber.
All funeral services for Skip will be private. Burial will be in East Cemetery, Manchester. Holmes-Watkins Funeral Home, Manchester, is in care of his arrangements.
