Martha A. (Moeckel) Johnson, 96, of Manchester, beloved wife of the late Richard W. Johnson, passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2018. She was born on August 4, 1921, in Crimmitschau, Saxony, Germany, to the late Frank and Anna Moeckel. The family came to the United States in 1923, where they settled in Pawtucket, R.I. Martha was a graduate of the Kenyon Commercial Business School in Pawtucket, R.I., class of 1939. Martha and Richard settled in Manchester in 1949, where they raised their two daughters, Elaine and Melanie. Prior to retiring, Martha was employed as a bank teller for the Savings Bank of Manchester and People's Savings Bank in Vernon, and worked as a bookkeeper for Cavrock of Vernon. Martha was known for her exceptional work creating hooked rugs. She was also very accomplished at knitting, crocheting and sewing. Martha loved animals, especially cats. She enjoyed gardening, reading, and spending time with her family. She was a longtime member of the former Fraser Rug Hooking Group in Manchester. Martha was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star #53, Manchester. Martha is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law; Elaine and Clay Gould and Melanie and William Nivison, all of Manchester; her four loving grandchildren; Richard Gould and his wife Natalie, of Colchester, CT; Kimberly (Gould) Foster and her husband Kevin, of Marlborough, CT; Erik Nivison and his fiance Sarah O'Donnell, of Peachtree City, GA; and Laurie Nivison of Manchester, CT; and her two great-grandchildren; Jacqueline Gould and Isabelle Hudson. In addition to her husband and parents, Martha was predeceased by her sister Elizabeth Bolton. The family wishes to thank the staff at Manchester Manor for their kind and compassionate care during her brief illness. Funeral services and burial in East Cemetery, Manchester, were private.
